Venice Beach-based duo EXES is back with a brand new song that is both highly personal and sonically touching.
Comprising vocalist Allie McDonald and producer Mike Derenzo, EXES is fresh off the success of their critically acclaimed debut EP The Art of Saying Goodbye.
A story of loss, 'Cain' is the first single they've released since making their debut, and McDonald says it just might be the most difficult and personal song they've written. 'Cain was my muse--my inspiration--my first love,' she explained. 'Although we were thousand of miles apart, we somehow found each other years ago. Our virtual relationship was composed purely of poems, songs, words, emails. I was never able to touch or meet Cain--he passed away in 2015. 6 months after his death, in what felt like a movie, I flew to England to meet his friends and family. This song is about that night I spent with his mom and best friend drinking champagne and dancing until the sun came up--reminiscing on a love that almost and will always be.'

Well, they say there’s a first time for everything, and this is definitely the first time that a track premiere has brought us to audible tears. Allie McDonald of EXES bravely exposes all vulnerability by presenting her most personal experience in the form of a hypnotic, left-field pop ballad named after the man it depicts, “Cain.”
EXES producer Mike Derenzo opens with a whimsical, atmospheric backdrop that swiftly leads into McDonald’s uninhibited storytelling, as “Cain” paints an immaculate picture of passion, love, loss, and nostalgia. From the cover art that transports us right into that fateful night in England, to expansive electronic soundscapes where synths and deep percussion juxtapose the magic of love with the grief of loss, “Cain” is certaintly one of EXES’ best pieces of work yet.
Allie McDonald shared a quote that encapsulates her moving experience,
“‘Cain’ might be the most difficult and personal song we’ve ever written. Cain was my muse–my inspiration–my first love. Although we were thousands of miles apart, we somehow found each other years ago. Our virtual relationship was composed purely of poems, songs, words, emails. I was never able to touch or meet Cain–he passed away in 2015. 6 months after his death, in what felt like a movie, I flew to England to meet his friends and family. This song is about that night I spent with his mom and best friend drinking champagne and dancing until the sun came up–reminiscing on a love that almost and will always be.”
“Cain” follows suit to EXES 2016 EP, The Art Of Saying Goodbye, adding to the duo’s collection of captivatingly somber pop songs. The single will be released tomorrow, June 2, but your exclusive stream is below in the meantime.
